Print me…

I first found out about Olivia Rubin when I saw her beautiful printed summer dresses on ASOS. The floaty fabric and bold prints made me instantly google her name and find her own website. Her background is impressive, with her studying at Central St. Martin’s from which she graduated in 2006 with a BA in Fashion Print.

She has worked for numerous designers such as couture designer, Jaques Azagury, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. At McQueen her prints were chosen for the AW05/06 menswear collection and for the womenswear pre fall AW05/06 collection. The same goes for her time at Galliano where she assisted both the women’s and men’s SS06 pret-a-porter collections including lingerie and accessories. Galliano also chose Rubin to produce the hat he wore for the SS06 menswear show.

Her designs for both her SS08 and SS09 collections have also seen her short listed for the semi-finals of Fashion Fringe in 2007/2008.

I’m not just going to feature one collection here, as I have fallen completely in love with both the Spring/Summer 09 and the Autumn/Winter 09, which are completely different but both show off her love for bold prints and contrasting colours.

This collection is what drew me to feature her on my blog. The mix of pastels against the bolder colours and prints, such as the tiger stripes is amazing. It’s the extra attention to detail that I really admire though, it’s the ruffles around the neckline of the shark print dress at the top, or the ruffles that hang beautifully down the peach satin jacket. Heaven..and that’s just for starters…

The Autumn/Winter collection features stronger cuts, the inclusion of trousers and all in ones, as well as bolder prints…

I love the strong squares of colours against the plain black or white backgrounds. I also like the use of slim cut trousers and of course the white jumpsuit.

This collection also sees textures combined, with lace being paired with what I think is a satin dress (very top) and also the combination of prints. The basic square shaped print is incorporated into different sizes and shapes to compliment the sharp jacket. To top it all off she has also included ruffles in the pink mini skirt and the ruffled peplum on the black dress above.

It really is no wonder Rubin has such a huge celebrity following. To see more pics from her collections visit www.oliviarubinlondon.com…it’s well worth it.
