5 Things to Do at the End of a Shitty Day

After a long, shitty day these are the five things I like to do to recharge my batteries and drown my sorrows so I’m fresh for another day. Wine is recommended but always optional.

1. Check Out Drake on Cake
Seriously. Follow Drake on Cake on Instagram. Drake lyrics on cake are a thing. My current fave is “hot love and emotion endlessly.” I like it so much, I’m thinking of basing our wedding cake for our UK party on it. Imagine towers of salted caramel and chocolate, covered in frosting with a shit-tonne of sprinkles and those lyrics. It’s a humdinger of a talking point.

2. Wine + Bubbles + Bath + Netflix
I feel like I talk about baths a lot on here. They help ease period pains, IBS pains and tend to take the edge off a really naff day. There is no better feeling than sliding down under the bubbles, candles flickering and a glass of wine on standby.

3. Whack on Some Tunes
I’d recommend The Most Beautiful Songs in the World playlist on Spotify for soul-soothing lullaby-like tracks. If Al’s not home by the time I hit the hay, I pop on this chilled playlist which helps me unwind and generally calm my body and brain – which before bed goes at a million miles an hour. Try it.

4. Read a Good Book
Reading a book is one of life’s simple pleasures for me. I’ve grown up with my nose in and out of books and can speed read like a demon. I’ve just finished Laura Jane Williams’s book, Becoming, which I couldn’t put down due to her brutal honesty. I admire her. Next up, Amy Schumer’s, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo.

5. Take Some Digital Time Out
I am a massive device addict and can be found staring at one of my screens, refreshing my social feeds, multiple times a day. It’s become an addiction. Making no-phone bans is the way forward when I want to take some time out, or actually give a film my undivided attention. We went away a few weekends ago and barely used our phones. Ultimate bliss, I tell you.

Failing all that, neck a couple of glasses (I mean bottles) of wine. That’ll make your mind all soft and fuzzy.

Hit me with your tips for unwinding below. I’m curious.

I am such a huge fan of baths. My Mum hates baths and it makes me doubt my parentage. x

I whack on an old Bollywood playlist – usually Kishore Kumar or Lata Mangeshkar and cook the day away. Biryani, stuffed flatbreads, all the Indian classics. Or cakes, cookies, tarts and pies with a little Fleetwood Mac. X

A hot bath with a bath melt full of petals, homemade chocolate popcorn and a cheeky glass of whiskey with ice. Ahhhhhhhhh and stretch those tootsies ?

Nathalie, hi! You need to tell me more about this homemade chocolate popcorn, I need this in my life. And I’m right there with you on the whiskey front. xx

  4. Totally agree – no.5 is spot on! Digital can be really draining – definitely not the aim! All in balance, eh. I treat myself to something sweet and chocolatey and curl up on the sofa with my favourite blanket and a decent tele programme (and a cuppa, always). Annnd relax.

Anna, it’s so draining! And you’re completely right, all in balance. I’m trying to balance my work/life/blogging mix at the moment. That sounds like the perfect way to unwind. xx
