Things I Wish I’d Known in My Teens

Now I’m nearing the landmark that is 30, I feel a helluva lot more myself than I ever have before. I feel like I’ve finally sussed things out. I’m settled and pretty happy with where I am in life. I know roughly what my next steps are and where I’m headed, so figured now is as good a time as any to share some things that I wished I’d known, or just listened to, in my teens.

Have at it…

Trust your gut more, if something feels wrong it probably is. Don’t spend an eternity questioning yourself. You will always know in yourself whether something feels right or wrong, trust it and roll with it.

I spent a really long time with a guy who wasn’t right for me in so many ways. My confidence got completely squashed but sometimes you have to hit rock bottom to appreciate how good it feels to climb back up to the top.

Always look after your health and body. Over the years I’ve had numerous problems and operations on my tonsils and throat, I’ve struggled with my IBS and migraines. I’m finally aware of what my body needs and what I need to do in order to stay healthy and keep my symptoms at bay.

Spend as much time with friends and family as possible. Cherish every moment because one day you’ll appreciate everything they do for you and you don’t want that to happen too late.

Don’t worry so much about your appearance. Beauty is skin deep. If you want a doughnut, eat the doughnut. If you want a bikini body, put a bikini on your body. Nobody is meant to look like the airbrushed models in magazines, nor should you want to. Embrace you, love every curve, dimple ad scar you were given. Each tells a story and each makes you different, which is a good thing. Heck, even Chrissy Teigen has stretchies.

You don’t need to map your life out or worry about where you’re going. You’ll get there. Your route might not always be direct and sometimes you might have to take two steps back in order to take one forward but all the hard slog will be worth it in the end.

I also asked my closest girl friends what they’d tell their younger selves. They said the following…

“OMG I hated being a teenager. You could not pay me all the money in the world to be a teenager again! I would say that things will turn out OK. You will experience new things and meet some incredible people growing up, so don’t get so caught up in school. Always have an open mind and study hard. Most of all take life on the chin and learn from your mistakes. People will always criticise every action you do, that will never change, so don’t worry about it.”

“It gets better. And don’t get so caught up with boys, that will all happen eventually, just enjoy being a kid.”
